For this small group project, the three of us focused on redesigning the SFGate.com website to acquire readers while decreasing the extremely high bounce rate of the current site. Today, the average user of the SFGate site reads only one article before leaving the page altogether–what if users had targeted front-page content that geared articles toward personal preferences?
For our solution we kept site mechanics as clean as possible while allowing users to select relevant content from the sidebar on the right. By removing clutter and targeting articles individually, we felt the bounce rate of the site would drop significantly. In addition, we brought sharing and social media into the picture, which, at the time SFGate did a poor job of capitalizing on. User voting systems were also integrated but with a toggleable switch between an “editor’s choice” and “reader’s choice” mode.
